What is Lithium Ion Battery and How It Works

A lithium-ion battery is an advanced type of battery that uses lithium-ion as used in the electrochemical process. The lithium ions are moved from the anode and pass through the electrolyte until it reaches the cathode. The lithium ions are smaller and able to move through a micro permeable separator between the cathode and an anode.

The movement of lithium ions creates a free flow of electrons in the anode, which creates a charge at the positive current collector. The use of a separator is to block the electron flow inside the battery. When the battery is discharging and provides electric current, the anode releases lithium ion to the cathode, which generates the flow of electrons from one side to another. This process is the opposite when the battery is charging, that lithium ions are released by the cathode and received by an anode.

Advantages of Lithium-Ion Batteries

The following are some advantages of a lithium-ion battery.

Small And Light:

Lithium-ion batteries are lesser in weight and compact in size than other battery types. This makes the battery easily portable and used in portable power stations. These are used in various devices with physical specifications such as weight and form factor are considered as important selling points.

Higher Energy Density:

These batteries have a higher power capacity without being too big. Due to their higher power capacity, these make these batteries more popular among the other types.

Low Self-Discharge:

Lithium-ion batteries are having extremely low self-discharge rate. This leads to the battery having a longer shelf life when it is not in use.

Non Memory Effect:

The lithium-ion battery has zero minimal memory effect. This is observed in rechargeable batteries which lose their maximum energy capacity after being partially discharged. This effect is common in nickel-metal hydride rechargeable batteries.

Fast Charging and High Open Circuit Voltage:

These batteries are quicker in charging than any other rechargeable battery type. Also, lithium-ion batteries are having a higher open-circuit voltage than other batteries such as lead-acid and nickel-cadmium.

Long Service Life and Low Maintenance:

Lithium-ion batteries can handle many discharge cycles. Some lithium-ion batteries will lose 20% of their capacity after 500 cycles, while the advanced batteries are having the capacity after 2000 cycles. LiPowertech is a Battery Factory that produces lithium-ion batteries doesn’t require any maintenance to ensure performance. Because it has zero memory effect and low self-discharge.

Conclusion:

Lithium-ion batteries are more popular nowadays because of their maintenance, charging speed, safety, and ease of charging. From the above, you can get a detailed knowledge of lithium-ion batteries and their benefits.
