How Can Christians Fight Depression

According to a new study, American citizens are the most dissatisfied they’ve been in over 50 years. Well-meaning individuals in your network may misjudge your emotional difficulties. “All you have to do is pray and read your Bible,” they may remark. But what if you do everything “right” and are still depressed? Read these 5 Biblical truths as a starting point for achieving peace—and never give up.

An adversary is waging war on you

“For we do not struggle against flesh and blood, but against rulers, authorities, cosmic powers over this present darkness, and spiritual forces of evil in the high realms.” 6:12 —Ephesians

Every day, a struggle for your soul rages. Our emotions are spiritual warfare, and believers of Christ are not immune to Satan’s attacks. Indeed, the more you live for Christ, the more dangerous you are to the devil.

Happiness and joy are not synonymous

Let’s face it: we don’t always want to smile. So, which is more Christ-like? Do you put on a phony smile or go about in gloom? Fortunately, there is a happy medium. Emotions, such as happiness, ebb, and flow like the ocean. However, underneath the smashing crests, there may be a profound undercurrent of ecstasy. Lean towards delight on days when happiness appears to be in scarce supply. The Psalmists frequently wrestle with this tension—between the urge to rejoice and the realities of daily life. Put words to your heart’s screams; read the Psalms and connect with God’s inspired words.

Spiritual disciplines might feel like disciplines at times

We are aware that Jesus is our only hope. We may not, however, wake up every morning excited to read the Bible, pray to our Father, and sing His praises. When you’re in the grip of depression, talking to God may be the last thing on your mind.

Spiritual disciplines are so named for a reason: we must teach ourselves to practice them even when our hearts aren’t in it. So pray, study your Bible, worship, and bear testimony. God will answer, even if he does not instantly deliver you.

God has the ability to make good out of this tragedy

Whether you realize it or not, this phase of despair is providing you with true empathy for friends, relatives, and coworkers who are experiencing similar difficulties.

When you come across folks who are hurting emotionally or psychologically, be prepared to share your own experience. Engage in open dialogue with your Christian brothers and sisters. Connect with nonbelievers—and consider how tough it would be to overcome depression without Christ’s purpose.

Remember, just because you’re a Christian doesn’t mean you have to pretend your life is great. But you can lead folks to a Savior who understands our grief and longs to sit with us in the middle of it.

You’re not by yourself

During His earthly ministry, not even Jesus was immune to sadness. He was enticed. He was in mourning. He prayed to God.

And you, too, are only human. So, if you’re dealing with depression, don’t try to generate the power on your own. Tell individuals you trust about what’s going on in your life. Be open to their suggestions. Accept their assistance.

Life is a journey, and the lows do not stay indefinitely. But if the darkness persists, don’t battle alone.
